Ben sustained a spinal cord injury while surfing around 9:00 AM on July 3rd, 2021. He shattered his C5 and C6 vertebrae. He has no recollection of the actual event, and it’s a mystery how he exited the water. By 9:00 PM the evening of his injury, there were still many unknowns including Ben’s ability to walk, use of his left arm, a surgeon willing to perform the surgery and even a vacant hospital bed while he waited. His family’s world was rocked as his wife navigated the situation with two young children at home.
There were countless miracles that day and the ensuing months that enabled Ben to resume life. His family would not be what it is today without an extraordinary set of fortunate circumstances and support that keeps him pushing forward to this day. Through an incredible amount of determination and hard work, he’s proud to play with his (now) four kids, enjoy the quiet times with his wife and have the courage to brave one of his greatest passions… surfing.
During his recovery, Ben made a promise to himself to help those with different outcomes. Many people who have spinal cord injuries do not have the same support network, advocates or resources. And many of them will rely on future breakthroughs to use their arms and legs again. They need our help.
Please join Ben to Brave the Breakers in support of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation to honor those who have survived a spinal cord injury and anyone you know living with paralysis. A surprising 5.4 million Americans – nearly 1 in 50 – live with some form of paralysis. The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation is dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research, and to improving the quality of life for people living with paralysis through grants, information and advocacy. Over the past few years, we’ve seen people who are paralyzed make noticeable improvements thanks to scientific advances the foundation helps to fund. You can help bring us a step closer to an actual cure.
Even if you don’t get in the water, come support those who do. We will have coffee, doughnuts, bagels and NA beer sampling. There will even be a Fjord mobile sauna on site to warm up pre and post plunge! Come help make the social media post look amazing!
